Using 2020 CFPS data, this paper examines the impact of family background on the returns on children's education. By constructing interaction terms and using OLS regression model, this paper calculates the returns on education brought by different levels of education. It is found that the overall returns on education in China is still significant at present, but with the passage of time, the education returns at different levels of education are all declining, and the education returns in basic education is no longer significant for the new generation of labor force. This paper further studies the influence of parents' income and education level on the returns on children's education, and finds that family background has no significant influence on the returns on basic education, but the returns on higher education will be significantly affected by family background, and the children of advantaged families often have a higher return on higher education. Under the goal of common prosperity, it is necessary to improve the return on basic education and balance the returns on higher education.
