“心”是孟荀均十分重视的一个概念。不论是孟子的四端之心说，还是荀子的以心知礼说，“心”都被视为人类社会得以凝结的枢纽，“心”也是人与人实现人格平等和社会现实平等的先天基础。孟荀通过对天人之际的不同理解，以“心”为核心对人何以为人、人何以立于天地间做了解答。孟荀对心的定位和理解虽有不同，然其关切却有相通之处。孟荀对春秋战国时期社会问题的关注、他们所揭示的儒家平等思想和人道理论，反映出他们在现实和理想两个层面对人本身的共同关切，他们对孔子思想的发展也都是对儒家人文主义和理性主义传统的推进。

"Heart" is a concept that both Mencius and Xunzi attach great importance to. Both in Mencius' theory of "the heart of the four ends" and in Xunzi's theory of "knowing the rites with the heart", "the heart" is regarded as the key where human society can be connected, and "the heart" is also the innate basis for people to realize the equality of personality. Throughout the different explainations in man and human of Mencius and Xunzi, we can see how they understand human nature and why human stands straight in between heaven and earth. Although Mencius and Xunzi had different understandings of the heart, their concerns had something in common. Mencius and Xunzi's attention to the social problems in the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period, as well as the Confucian theory of equality and humanism revealed by them, reflect their common concern for human being in both reality and ideal, and their development of Confucius thought is also the promotion of the tradition of Confucian humanism and rationalism.
