Serving in poverty was required in medieval western European monastic orders that regulated friars and nuns to content the religious life of impoverishment and chaste, vowed to abandon all their possessions or ownerships in the secular world. In the 13th century, St. Clare of Assisi who was a female Franciscan led the nuns in the monastery of St. Damiano, also known as the Poor Ladies or Poor Clares, to obey the perfect poverty order as their principle profession. Compared to the other convents at the same time, the Poor Ladies demonstrated their specialties in both the conceptions and practices of poverty. Meanwhile, with the assistances of the Church, the St. Franciscans, those sisters generally maintained sufficently. The Poor Ladies not only treated poverty as an individual discipline following the example of St. Benedict Order, but also emphasized its importance of making decisions on receiving endowments. Their traits of development illustrated how a non-mainstream convent in medieval Italy established and survived. This article will primarily discuss the Poor Ladies and review the poverty order in the history of Christian monasteries, also outline the unique definition of poverty and practice of St. Clare, as well as analyze how they communicated with the male friars and the Church, therefore to generate a deeper understanding of the early Franciscans and convents in the High Middle Ages.
